Know more about Brick and its Quality Standards

Bricks are the most useful thing in a construction and good bricks are most demanded thing which comes with various qualities.

About Brick: Brick is a building material used in masonry construction to make walls, pavements and other elements; it is basically a unit of composed clay-bearing soil, sand and lime or other concrete materials. Bricks are made in various classes, types, materials and sizes that vary as per region and time period producing bulk quantities.

There are two main categories of brick: non-fired and fired. Fired bricks are the longest lasting and strongest building materials known as artificial stone and have been using from a long time. Clay bricks are one of the oldest building materials and most known among other building materials as it is inexpensive, strong and easy to handle.

A good brick has some qualities that make it strong useful in making exterior walls, partions, and piers etc.; which are described here:

  • Brick Earth: This earth of brick doesn’t have stones, kankars, organic matter, saltpeter or any kind of damaging chemical in it and should be smooth and clean to make fine bricks.
  • Size: Bricks must have the right size to hold the building well and should be made in right size, rectangular shape, plain and smooth in surfaces with parallel sides and sharp straight edges. The bricks with right and equal size are perfect to use in the building construction and a good brick should maintain tolerances in both width and height.
  • Shape: The good bricks must have right uniformed shape with specific size; the edges of bricks should be sharp, straight and must be in a right angle.
  • Color of Brick: We all have seen the matt copper color of the bricks that are used in construction work; those are made when they are burnt well. If the bricks may burn much more than the deserved heat, or if they will under burnt, then they will lose their equality of color on the surface and also lose their extreme strength.
  • Soundness: A proper burnt brick will make a metallic sound while hitting by a hammer or another brick that can’t be founded in the under or over burnt brick.
  • Hardness: Good bricks are strong enough to bear any kind of scratch made by nails or fingers.
  • Strength: The compacted strength should been minimum 35 N/mm2 as per IS code.
  • Texture and density: Bricks must have a smooth surface to avoid any slipping of mortar and must be contained pre-compacted and uniform texture without any cracks, holes or lumps.
  • Water absorption: A good brick should not absorb over 20% water of its dry weight if it is kept in water for 24 hours.
  • Frog in brick: The bricks should be made of extra fog to fill the mortar in it perfectly and the frog should be 100 mm in length and 40 mm in width and 10 mm depth.
