Stone Wall Calculator: How Much Stone Do You Need?
Making ensuring you order the right amount of material is crucial while building a stone wall. To determine the precise amount of stone you will require for your project, follow this detailed guide.
In this article, we strive to make it as simple as possible for you to see the precise type of stone you are selecting and the potential quantity you will require. Here are some general considerations to keep in mind, although the majority of our stones have a quantity calculator on the product page itself to eliminate any guesswork from your order.

Step 1: Measure Your Wall Dimensions
A great stone wall project starts with precise measurements. Measure these important dimensions carefully before estimating materials:
Wall Length: Calculate the wall’s total horizontal length in feet. Divide your wall into smaller pieces and measure each one independently if it has any bends or segments.
Wall Height: Calculate the distance in feet from the wall’s base to its top. Take many height readings and use the average if the ground is uneven.
Wall Thickness: In contrast to height and length, wall thickness is expressed in inches. In your measurement, be cautious to account for any hidden structural elements.
Step 2: Calculate the Volume of the Wall
The next step is to figure out how much space the stone will take up when you have the length, height, and thickness of the wall. This is accomplished by applying the following calculation to determine the wall’s total volume in cubic feet:
Wall Volume (cubic feet) = Length × Height × (Thickness/12)
In order to maintain consistency across all units, wall thickness is converted from inches to feet by dividing by 12.
Example Calculation: Assume that your wall is 12 inches thick, 30 feet long, and 5 feet high. Using the formula to enter these values: 30 × 5 × (12/12) = 150 ft³
Step 3: Account for Waste
Cutting, shape, and uneven stone sizes inevitably result in some material loss when working with natural stone. It is advised to add 15% more to account for waste in order to prevent shortages.
Total Stone Volume = Wall Volume × 1.15
Example Calculation: We apply the 15% waste ratio to the wall volume of 150 cubic feet from our earlier example: 150 × 1.15 = 172.5 ft³
Step 4: Convert Volume to Weight (Tons)
You’ll need to convert cubic feet to tons because stone is usually sold by weight rather than volume. For this calculation, our calculator uses 150 pounds per cubic foot as the typical stone density. The following is the conversion formula:
Stone Weight = Total Stone Volume × 150
Since 1 ton = 2,000 lbs, we get the required number of tons by dividing the total weight by 2,000:
Stone Needed in Tons = Stone Weight/2000
Example Calculation: Using our adjusted stone volume of 172.5 cubic feet:
172.5 × 150=25,875 lbs
25,875/2000=12.94 tons
Step 5: Estimate the Cost (Optional)
This formula can be used to rapidly get the total expected cost if you already know the price per ton from your stone supplier:
Estimated Cost = Stone Needed in Tons × Price per Ton
Example Calculation (assuming $45 per ton):
12.94 × 45 = $582.30
