Is Bamboo Really Stronger Than Steel for Reinforcement?

It might come as a shock to conventional minds having been devoted to the fact that steel is one of the best materials out there for building any form of structure, but you may be wrong!

Bamboo is said to have high tensile strength and that too in the same order as steel! Bamboo, being an organic material does not face an issue of rotting while exposed to moisture because of the impermeable protective layer that is formed on the outermost layer of it.

bamboo vs steel reinforcement

Advantages of Bamboo over Steel

  • Bamboo is preferred over steel for reinforcement in concrete because it has a tensile strength of close to 28,000 per inch as compared to the 23,000 per inch (approx.) of steel. That conveys that Bamboo is almost 6 times stronger than steel for reinforcement.
  • Also, production of Bamboo is way easier for steel since this is an organic material.
  • Lastly, the tensile strength to weight ratio, which determines how much load a material can carry at the expense of it being heavy or light in weight, is higher by 6 times for bamboo compared to steel.

The Future Scope Looking ahead for sustainable and green development, Bamboo is going to be the bright choice for future builders. With some of the countries such as China and Siberia already shifting towards bamboo construction, it is not far when it will be included in the existing building codes and standards to be taken up as a regular construction material.
